Our reader Frank asked recently if brand names were generally cheaper in Lidl than in Dunnes or Tesco. I had no idea about that, so noted some brand name prices last time I was in Lidl and then compared them to the prices on Tesco’s website. All these products appeared to be at their normal price and none were on special offer.
| Branded Item | Lidl Price | Tesco Price |
|---|---|---|
| Nescafe Gold Blend 200g | €7.94 | €8.59 |
| Lloyd Grossman Sauce (Thai Curry) | €2.35 | €2.35 |
| Oxo Beef Stock Cubes (Box of 12) | €1.39 | €1.39 |
| Branston Pickle 520g | €1.94 | €1.94 |
| Heinz Ketchup 1.2 kg | €2.99 | €3.88 |
| Weetabix 48 pack | €4.63 | €4.86 |
| Coke 2ltr | €2.09 | €2.09 |
| Mars/Snickers/Twix Snack Pack | €1.99 | €2.09 |
As you’ll see from the table, there’s very little in it. Lidl comes in slightly cheaper: you’d save €1.87 by buying the above selection of goods in Lidl. But Lidl have far fewer brand names on offer, so if you prefer to buy branded products, Tesco would give you more choice. Shopping around will always give you the best value, as long as you have the time and the inclination of course.
