My SuperValu happens to be just across the road from the Lidl I shop in. Lately, I’ve done most of the shopping in these two places, taking the occasional giddy detour to M&S for little treats.

divine-chocI’ve been generally happy with the choice and value at SuperValu. It’s just €1.39 for a 100g bar of the divine Divine Fairtrade chocolate. The same bar is €2.04 in Dunnes, while 100g Lindt will set you back no less than €2.10 anywhere (I’m open to correction) and Green and Black’s overrated product can hover around the €3 mark. Divine at SuperValu is also cheaper than the dark chocolate  you’ll get in Lidl.

This is the type of bargain I really like – not a once-off special but a permanently low price product that didn’t involve any exploitation.

Divine tickles my taste buds better than Lindt or Green & Black’s, and its Fairtrade status is a bonus. Meanwhile, chocolate at this price gives lie to the notion that Fairtrade is too expensive.

So happy was I with my shameful haul of chocolate booty, we decided to make dark chocolate our ingredient of the week. Over the next few days, we’ll help you eat it in every way imaginable.
