Restaurant Review: Viewmount House, Longford

viewmount-dessertsI was in Viewmount House in Longford for a wedding recently, and the food was just spectacular.  The good news is that you don’t have to be attending a wedding to eat there: the B&B has a full-time restaurant that serves evening meals and Sunday lunch.

We had a five-course meal and there was a much wider choice on the menu than you usually see at weddings.  I had a very good Salmon Gravadlax for my starter, and a delicious Vegetable Soup with Salsa Verde for one of those unneccessary but tasty in-between courses.  My main was Sirloin Steak with Colcannon, and was one of the best steaks I’ve ever had.  The other diners all made similar claims for their meals, but I can’t remember the details as the steak filled up all the pores in my brain.  Steaaaak.

Dessert was a sampler plate of five miniature desserts, some more successful than others.  The orange chocolate souffle, served in the skin of a tiny orange, was delicious. Coffee came with petit fours, but at that point I had begun to fear a stomach rupture so just had the coffee.

As this was a wedding, the cost of the meal was shielded from our delicate eyes, but I see on the Viewmount website that dinner is €55, and Sunday lunch is €29 – both excellent prices for such high-quality food.  The rooms are also gorgeous, and they have lovely gardens to wander in: it’s a beautiful spot for a night away and of course, perfect for a wedding.  Recommended!
