Irish grocery market described as a ‘wild west’

Posted by: jean in: Food News

The Green Party’s Trevor Sargent added his voice to calls for a food ombudsman this week, along with Andrew Doyle of Fine Gael, who said that a ’sheriff’ is needed to police the ‘wild west’ of the retail market.  Sargent refers to the ‘intimidation’ of small suppliers by grocery chains.  I’ve heard similar claims: that certain large supermarket chains abuse their position by making unfair demands on suppliers.  I can’t go into details as it’s all hearsay and we could have our pants sued off, but it’s good to see the situation being addressed in the Dail.

The Irish Times has the full story.
