And a Bad Deal?

Posted by: peter in: Bad Value

ray's pizzaI noticed this large shiny sign in the window of Ray’s Pizza, beside the Foggy Dew at the Central Bank. Three euro for a slice of cheese pizza, and four for a pepperoni slice! Sheesh… A full pizza in most similar places might be around the €10  mark, and contain, let’s say, six slices. So Ray’s, to put it kindly, costs at least double what it should. Perhaps it’s amazingly high-quality?

I spent a summer in Vancouver, Canada as a student and lived on $1 slice pizzas. They were grand, with some offering especially good value for your dollar. Is there anything that comes close here?

The site now occupied by Ray’s has seen off numerous fast-food joints, and they’ve all been terrible at best.  But no doubt somebody will let me know if I’ve committed a terrible error and Ray’s is actually the best pizza this side of New York.

$1 pizza slices were genius… ahh to go back on my J1!

Of course 6 individual slices cost more than a full pizza. 2 half pints come to more than the price of a pint.

I love the way they charge for pizza slices in Rome – you’re charged by the weight rather than a fixed price per slice…. like veg shopping.

Haven’t been to Rays but the Dubliner mag ‘Best of Dublin’ issue (or something like that anyway) said they were the best pizza – they specifically mentioned a goats cheese topped one.

A pizza is cheap to produce. I make some at home for less than 3 euros. The dough is essentially flour, water, yeast and olive oil. Top that with a few spoons of tomato sauce and cheese. Even with a slice of ham and some sliced mushrooms, that wouldn’t bring the cost up too much

New York pizza like Ray’s and DiFontaine’s is definitely NOT easy to make at home. I don’t know what the secret is, but it’s like crack for me. I would happily pay E3 for a slice as they’re really big and quite filling.

I love the pizza in here and would readily pay for it. You get heapfuls of toppings and the slices are huge. Cant recommend this place highly enough.

Oh God me too, Claire! My mates got me whole one for my birthday instead of a cake one year. I used to be such a regular in there I actually stopped being charged. I had to stop going because I was so ashamed. If you like DiFontaines, you’ll like Ray’s too!

They are huge slices, though – even bigger than DiFontaine’s, if perhaps not QUITE as tasty. Very yum, though. They also so a deal for about €6.50 where you can get a portion of tasty chips and a can of Coke with your slice.
