Hallowe’en Food, Spooky Stories, and Horror in Carlow

halloween-folkloreHallowe’en is coming, so it’s time for Colcannon, sticky toffee apples, and barm brack! If you’re looking for a cheap, seasonal meal, I hope to see you down in Carlow this Friday October 30.

I’ll be facilitating the Hallowe’en Folklore night, a fun and informal session of “spooky stories” over a light dinner of seasonal foods. It’s in the  new George Bernard Shaw Theatre at the Visual Centre for Contemporary Art, an outstanding building with a really great theatre programme.

On the night, you’ll hear about the supernatural legends and beliefs behind some of the greatest horror movies of all time as well as the origins of Hallowe’en, and some of the haunted history of Carlow from expert local storytellers.

When I’m not finding bargains, I teach Irish Folklore in UCD. I need you to join in the session on Friday night with your own spooky stories from the county – and beyond!  With your permission, I’ll record some of them for contribution to The National Folklore Collection at University College Dublin.

logo-img-blockI think it’ll be a really fun and informative night out. It kicks off at 8pm and it’s just €16.50/€14 for the evening.

On Saturday afternoon, I’ll be hosting a screening of Roald Dahl’s The Witches for all the family, while on Sunday night, I’ll introduce some of the folklore and mythology behind Guillermo del Toro’s masterpiece, Pan’s Labyrinth.

Please note that due to the nature and horror movie content of this storytelling session it may not be suitable for young or sensitive patrons.

  1. I saw a bumper sticker yesterday that read:

Forget the prince on a white horse
    I want a vampire in a volvo.

Weird – I wondered if it had anything to do with a Halloween celebration or a Twilight fan,…..

  2. I think it’s a reference to Twilight, the boring sensation that’s sweeping the nation.

  3. Definitely Twilight. It’s a teenage phenomenon. I bloody love it.
