  1. Chicken is a hard one. It could be argued though that buying Peruvian carrots means money is going to those more deserving than subsidised, EU-protected Irish farmers, if you’re that way inclined. I don’t think its possible to be completely ethical in your consumer habits. Even if you did only eat fruit that fell from the tree, you are depriving some animal of its lunch. I think you should pick a few things and stick to them and add more ethical choices if and when you can afford to.

  2. Agree with Snack Box, you cannot be completely ethical, but can only try to do as best as you can. Organic doesn’t have to be the holy grail, it’s better to buy non organic apples grown locally than organic ones from New Zealand. For meat, I think the problem is not eatin meat per se, but rather the frequency and the choices we make. People now want to eat meat every day, sometimes twice a day, and only the posh cuts like sirloin steak and chicken breast. What happened to offal, cheap cuts and pigs trotters? Most butchers won’t even sell them anymore. And I would rather eat chicken only once a month and afford the best free-range, grain or corn fed, than a cheap greasly and anemic one weekly. It’s not only for ethical reasons, but cheap chicken is just not worth cooking.

  3. “Even if you did only eat fruit that fell from the tree, you are depriving some animal of its lunch.” Eat the animal too, simple! 😀

I agree with you both, organic is not the be all and end all. Im very conscious of animal welfare, and buy the best meat I can afford. I find fish a more difficult to navigate. It seems that everytime I buy eg seabass, I discover that its farmed and overframed. Ive pretty much given up on fish.

  4. Excellent post… “After all, if it wasn’t for meat protein we
wouldn’t be the political animals we are today.” LOL.

  5. I think my favourite bit was “Who gives a damn where they
came from? It’s where they’re going that matters.” Nice work strange journalism lady.

  6. Excellent piece – it’s like you know me.
