Review: The Squealing Pig, Monaghan

squealing-pigBy Jean McGuire

On a recent visit to Monaghan, we had the pleasure of being taken to The Squealing Pig, known locally as “The Pig”, for a meal.

It’s not a very impressive establishment from the outside and indeed not much better from inside. Had it not been recommended to us for good quality food we might well have passed on by. The building is on three floors, with the restaurant on top. Very simple surroundings, just wooden tables and chairs and plain walls, but the food makes really makes up for everything.

Four of us chose from the set menu: four courses for €20 each and each course equally delicious: fish cooked to perfection, home-made chips rather the usual old frozen afterthoughts, baby potatoes for those not having chips, vegetables fresh and al dente, a selection of starters and some beautiful desserts.

Very good value all around; I would definitely recommend a visit to “The Pig”.
