Fish hunt

Last week, I was all set to make this trout recipe for a pregnant friend, so I went to Sea Pearls on Richmond Street (just between Camden St. and the canal).

Sadly, it appears to have closed down. It may have been a warning that my fear of poisoning pregnant women with fish - not just shellfish - wasn’t completely irrational. Or it may have had something to do with the incredible slowness of one particular staff member, who scaled the fish with a look of disgust on his face.

Anyway, I searched all around the Camden Street area for a fishmonger. Plenty of butchers, but not a little fish in sight. I remember that there used to be a fishmonger just off Grafton Street, but they closed a few years ago.

Of course, you’ll get great fish in Howth and Dun Laoghaire, but it’s not much use unless you live nearby. In the end I gave up and made this sausage and lentil stew instead. So, besides the supermarkets - Superquinn’s fish is consistently good, Tesco’s and Dunnes’ not as much - do any of our lovely readers know where I can I find a decent fishmonger in Dublin? And can anyone recommend a good fishmongers outside the Dublin area?

There is (was?) a fishmonger in baggot street, on the merrion square side, just next to Tesco. I have always meant to go but I have never been yet.

Melanie, it was there two years ago anyhow - assume it still is. Wasn’t overly impressed with the stock last time I was in there though - might just have been an off day.

Anyone used the fish counter in fallon & byrne? assume its fairly pricey, but whats the quality like?

They do lovely fresh fish at the farmers market in Marley Park. Although it probably isn’t much use if you’re in town, but you could try out the markets in your area. I thought it was the nicest fish I’ve had for some time.

There’s a fishmongers in Smithfield that has a fantastic selection. I’ve only been once so I can’t remember if it was good value.

The fish in fallon and byrne can be good but other times it looks just awful. I’d only recommend buying fish there if you know by looking at it if it is fresh or not - if you don’t generally deal with fish, I wouldn’t trust them, to be honest.

I find, living in the city centre, that I normally resort to M&S fish. It’s always fresh at least even if it pre packaged.

I have heard that there’s a good fish monger near the fish market in Smithfield called Kish but I’ve yet to check it out. Having fish in our house normally turns into a day out in Howth - go for a walk, buy lots of fish, come home for dinner. YUM, but oh so impractical if you fancy a quick healthy dinner mid week.

Have you people tried Asia Market on Drury Street (very close to Grafton)? I bought some seabreams and trouts from there, and some fresh prawns too…

M&S fish is always good and there’s often some sort of offer there: Jean picked up four delicious trout fillets for €5 last summer. Cristi, was the Asia Market’s fish any good?

That Sea Pearls place was weird… I went in to ask if they had any lemon sole and he couldn’t grasp the concept- wanted to give me sole and a lemon. Very rude also.

There’s a fishmongers in Donnybrook on the garda side which is alright.

The fishmongers in Donnybrook (beside Fox’s) is called Molloys. I shop there every week. The fish is probably on the pricey side but it has never been less than excellent. They always keep the fish on loads of ice which is so important for freshness, and although they seem slightly grumpy, once you are a regular customer they look after you very well.

Wrights of Marino is an excellent fishmonger and so, so cheap! Must do a post on this place sometime, I always swing by if I’m driving anywhere nearby.

@Peter, yes, it was fine but I must say that I have my doubts regarding chinese fresh food, you know that (and I dont’ want to be rude&anything like this) they don’t have standards for aquaculture, they don’t care too much about healthy&safety foods.
So……..it was good, but definitely I just want to buy fish from an Irish fishmonger. I can trust them more, that’s for sure.
I live in Milltown D6 - does anybody know something in this area?

I also thought I saw it open on Saturday. Otherwise, Lawlors of Upper Rathmines Road have a fish counter as well as a selection of smoked fish and crab meat.

I have to say, in total contrast to what some other people here think, I really like Sea Pearls. I think they do lovely fish and the difference in flavour and texture between their produce and Superquinn is huge. It may not be the most fancy premises and they may be a little slow at times, but I’d get over that to get good food..actually, the other day I asked him if he had a larger portionof salmon and he went out back, got a whole salmon and cut exactly what I wanted from it, no fuss. If that isn’t customer service, I don’t know what is! Refreshing shop, so different from the supermarket chains we have become so dependent on.

Fish counter on Fallon & Byrne pretty good esp on delivery days - tuesday seems best to me. Michael Byrnes Butchers in Sandymount also have a fish counter which is excellent if a bit pricey

It was one of those weird things… all trace of the place had disappeared? Is it on this street, I asked myself, or am I going mad? Seemingly, it’s the latter. I do like Sea Pearls despite the slowness and hope it hasn’t closed down!

Kish in Smithfield is great. I wish they stayed open until after 1pm on a Sunday though as I tend to like my lie-ins at the weekend :). Fish selection is wide, tastes great and the service is good. Also have a decent selection of frozen fish and fish accompaniments there.

There’s a little fishmonger at the top of Manor Street across from the Aughrim St junction that’s excellent value. It’s a little bit grim inside but the fishmonger is lovely and the fish is always good.

Pa,

yes there is a lovely butcher/ fishmonger on Meath Street, the one furthest from the Thomas Street End of Meath Street, as in the one closest to the Coombe. You have fish and poultry on the left, and pork and stuff on the right. I can only recommend it!!
