What’s your miracle cure?

flaxseedI’ve been a bit of a wreck lately. I’ve no idea why I’m confessing this all to the nation, but I’ve been home alone for the past few weeks and eating really unhealthily. I became addicted to Burdock’s, I ate a packet of biscuits for my dinner, and I once woke up with a chocolate bar in my mouth.

Unsurprisingly, my body revolted. It’s not used to being treated so poorly, so it reacted with mouth ulcers and a persistent pain in the side. I ignored them until last week when they started screaming REALLY LOUD. I resigned myself to imminent death.

Still not prepared to go to the doctor, I went to a health food shop and asked for some (temporary) advice. I came away with tea tree oil, which I gargled with some salt and warm water: bye bye mouth ulcer. I also picked up some Linwood’s milled flaxseed to improve digestion, and within a few days, I was noticeably better. I just stirred in a big spoonful to my yoghurt or soup, and sprinkled some over the dinner. It cost just over €7 for 425g. There’s €70 saved on a trip to the doctor, and now I’m back to healthy eating – mostly.

I’m now telling anyone who’ll listen – that’s you, poor readers – that tea tree oil and flaxseeds are miracle cures for all sorts of ailments. So, dear readers, what are your ailments and what natural remedies do you swear by?

  1. At the first signs of a cold, I recommend Echinacea. They are available in capsules or drops and will prevent the cold from developing.

  2. I recommend red wine, for everything – full of antioxidants. Laughter is also a great curer.

  3. Zinc, zinc and omega 3. I haven’t had a cold in years. I also started taking EPA and DHA six months ago and found I no longer need anti depressants. Although I will be on the dole again in May so we’ll see then!

  4. Thanks for the tip with the tea tree oil, I get mouth ulcers from just a single packet of taytos so I’m sure I’ll use that in future! How much do you need to use?

  5. Manuka honey is brilliant for sore throats. It’s pricey but it tastes delish. Boyne Valley does it, as do M&S. Eat it straight from the spoon, or mix a good dessertspoonful with the juice of half a lemon and some hot water for the nicest ever Lemsip substitute.

  6. I’m with Lar on the red wine, cures everything – even hangovers!

    My miracle cure is chilli and ginger for anything cold-related. As hot as you can stand it, it blasts the sinuses and chases away snuffles before they get a chance to take hold.

  7. Garlic. Eat lots of it, raw, and no-one will come near you, so you won’t pick up any bugs!
    Seriously though, Organic live yogurt (I buy Glenisk) definitely chases thrush away. I also know two people who had serious ilnesses and couldn’t face their usual food. I persuaded them to try Glenisk strawberry yogurt, they both loved it, and it kept them going until they got their appetites back.
