New ice cream at Aldi

aldi-ice-creamUpdate: The ice cream is only €2.29, not €2.99. My bad. That’s purdy good value.

Tried and tested on a jury of our peers: Aldi’s new ice-cream range. And the result – more reasons to love Aldi. Coming in three flavours – Madagascan vanilla, caramel fudge, and the pièce de résistance, triple chocolate – each contains 900ml of very delicious ice cream.

Aldi sent me a BOX of this new ice cream to review the other week. I’m starting to think there’s a conspiracy to fatten me up, but of course I’ve had to share the tubs with friends and family, so maybe it’s a conspiracy to make me popular…

Made by Killeigh Farm exclusively for Aldi, these tubs are only €2.29 each, and contain a very generous 900ml. Sue, Sinead and I mixed the triple chocolate with some Maltesers and raspberries for a delicious midweek dessert, while my parents and nephew are big fans of the caramel fudge ice cream.

AldiNow, I may not be comparing like with like, but let’s look at the prices: it’s about €4.99 for 500ml of Haagen-Daaz or Ben and Jerry’s (unless they’re on special, and even then you’ll get more in the Aldi tub), €4.49 for 500ml of Superquinn’s own brand luxury ice-cream, around €3.67 for a litre of Carte d’Or at Tesco, or around €2.49 for one litre of Tesco ice cream.

For a cheap ice-cream that doesn’t taste cheap, this is another one to add to Aldi’s growing list of top-quality products at budget range prices.

  1. I used to live Aldi’s 500ml caramel ice-cream but they stopped stocking it (or, I think, changed their ice-cream supplier) sometime in the last year or so. I’ll be interested to try this one, yum.

  2. Does anyone at all do a pistachio ice cream in Ireland? Although maybe Im better off not knowing.

  3. I haven’t seen pistachio ice cream for sale here but the recipe for it in ‘The River Cafe Italian cookbook’ is pretty amazing!

  4. Nah, when I want ice cream, I want it now! I couldn’t be bothered waiting for it to freeze.

  5. I love pistachios and I love ice cream but doesn’t pistachio ice cream taste like poison? I think so

  6. I think its lovely.

  7. I’m always a bit wary of cheap ice-cream. I’m not a big spender in general but I do think that with ice cream you get what you pay for. However, this one sounds great and I will deffo be trying it!

  8. Nice one this sounds delish!

  9. Uhm… not sure… free ice cream is always good ice cream, your senses may have been blurred…
    🙂

  10. Liana – I’ll be happy to test that theory if it can be arranged 🙂

  11. I dont like chocolate chip ice cream at all. Chocolate shouldn’t be even chilled let alone frozen. Now coconut ice cream…or hazelnut oooohhhhh……

  12. I bought the caramel fudge one before zOMG zOMG!…..I would only buy again if I have lots of people around for dinner because it’s bloody dangerous to have in the house when you have no willpower!!

  13. I was a huge fan of macadamia nut brittle haagen dazs for a while. Thought myself quite the ice cream snob- THEN I tried the pecan ice cream in marks and spencers. That stuff is the tits!

  14. Ha, that’s a fair comment Liana! 🙂 No, I still reckon it was very good. The key test is really whether I’d go out and buy it myself. And I certainly would. All that’s stopping me is the absence of a nearby Aldi – though that might be about to change very soon… 🙂
