Christmas at Aldi

I just yelled at a family member for getting the Christmas food in Tesco. I practically accused her of a crime against Christmas.

It’s because (a) Christmas organisation is somewhat stressful as well as fun, leading to my outburst of grumbling and (b) Aldi and Lidl are cheaper, better, and less evil. I tend to go to Lidl more often than Aldi, but that’s only because Aldi has virtually no presence in Dublin outside the centre, west, and north of the county. Aldi unquestionably has a much better range, in terms of quality and value, than its rival. Indeed, putting prices aside, Aldi’s product range is generally tastier than you’ll find in any other supermarket.

On a tight budget, you can still have all the usual delicious Christmas foods without having to opt for value lines like Tesco Value or St. Bernard. I’ll be going to the folks for a few days but will still have the usual treats around my own place, and most of these are from Aldi:

  • McGrath’s teabags (stuff your dull debates – these are better than Barry’s or Lyons) – €1.69
  • Specially Selected back rashers (gorgeous, and about half the price of the inferior branded rivals) – €1.99
  • Farmhouse soda bread (I’ll be shot, but I prefer this to McCambridge’s) – 79c
  • Brannan’s cocktail sausages (lovely, the only Bord Bia approved own brand, and great for party food) – €1.59 per pack
  • Great value hams at just €6.99 for a medium fillet (I’ll need some after I eat all my parent’s ham!)
  • Luxury ice creams – €2.29
  • Double cream (250ml) – €1.29
  • Brandy cream – personally, I found this as disturbing as it sounds, but it might be to some tastes – €1.29
  • Mini Christmas puddings – €2.99
  • Specially Selected luxury cheese pack (unlike Lidl, Aldi have very good cheese, up there with Superquinn’s) – €9.99
  • Fletcher’s port – €6.49
  • Toffifee – €2.99

  1. I did an Aldi shop on Sunday – ham, Three Bird Roast, Smoked Salmon, OJ & Apple juice, cheese etc. And then the weather changed so I did a T**co online shop so they would deliver the heavy stuff (may God forgive me)

  2. I’m glad I’m not the only one who explodes at the thought of buying anything in Tesco! Had to buy garlic oil in their branch in Dolphin’s Barn there the other week out of necessity, and I’m STILL riddled with guilt and annoyance. I’ve been hearing about figures in relation to jobs that are being lost due to Tesco switching their sourcing from Irish to UK suppliers and it makes my blood boil.

  3. also a lot of the stuff at Aldi is good quality tastes great and is sourced in Ireland , just there is not sign of one appearing in the south of co. Dublin at all !

  4. McGrath’s teabags – the tea is grand, but the bag often tear when you try to separate them.
Aldi specially selected Irish fillet steaks are great, and the vacuum pack will sit for weeks in the fridge.

  5. Yes, come on Aldi, open a shop in the Dun Laoghaire/ Rathdown county council area. There’s a huge demand!

  6. Aldis’ specially selected mince pies are also fablisss.

  7. To Peter, Nutgrove?

  8. Thanks Barry. Yes, but it’s the only one and it’s a bit of a trek compared to the three very near branches of Lidl. I know lots of people would be more likely to go to Aldi, but who wants to drive past five or six supermarkets on the way? Aldi would thrive around Blackrock/ Dun Laoghaire/ Stillorgan/ Bray.

  9. I think Aldi is the best ever but I have to disagree with the teabags, unless maybe if they were ‘gold’ ones, I didn’t like their regular green McGrath’s tea at all. We do our weekly shop in Aldi (Nutgrove) and we think it’s fab. Normally between 80e and 100e for the family for the week!

I am so pleased they started stocking Rep Irish milk (1 litre only), so we now buy our milk there and their yogurts are also Irish.

We love their Irish sausages and most of their meats are Irish too…so it’s all plus signs from me!

    In relation to Christmas –
We got their Salmon wellington, very very tasty!! 4.99, whole family ate it.
We tried their champagne, 23e I think it was…very nice, even French husband liked it!
Their Czech beer isn’t bad either.
And their Indian selection 60 for 4.99 or 5.99 is brilliant!!

  10. I read recently that 45% of the products sold in Aldi are actually Irish, which is not at all unimpressive.

  11. Ok I realise that Barry already said this but HELLO!!! Aldi Nutgrove! And it’s the closest to me and is a grand distance from dundrum, rathfarnham, stilorgan, rathgar and lots more (as well as the lovely Churchtown…).

BTW, funnily enough, my aunt is an accountant for lidl but always shops in Aldi. hee

  12. Nutgrove is still too far away!

    • Was at the Store and went bacck down leaving my son at the till when i came home and was checking my receipt which you do in these recessionary times to my horror and dismay i was disappointed to notice that i had been charged 39cents for a bag that i never asked for.

The fact that i do my weekly shopping in one of your stores I was very disappointed with the fact that i had been overcharged.

      Deirdre

    • Hi Deirdre – is this a complaint for Aldi? This isn’t the Aldi site. You should find what you need at http://www.aldi.ie.
