Reader Query: Canary Island Red Mojo Sauce

We got an email from a reader recently asking if anyone can help them to track down a speciality sauce from the Canary Islands:

“I have recently returned from a holiday in the Canaries. I absolutely loved the Canarian ‘papas con mojo’. I have desperately tried to find the sauce here in Ireland, but have failed miserably. So I was wondering if you or any of your readers are aware of a shop in Dublin where I can buy the sauce pre-made. With a busy work schedule I find that I don’t have time to make the entire sauce from scratch. Many thanks.”

Anyone have any tips? Or is it back to the Canaries with an empty suitcase for this reader?

  1. No sure if it helps, but there is a Spanish grocery shop on Lower Liffey Street (on the corner of Lower Liffey and Strand Street Great). I have never been there myself but I guess it is worth a try.

  2. fallon and byrne possibly?????

  3. A video for the recipe here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JL9WmlOCaZ8, so you can even make it yourself, failing finding the bottled version
    Or on Amazon.co.uk: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tapas-potatoes-with-mojo-sauce/dp/B004E2BUE0

  4. I have three jars of the stuff but she’s getting none of it! It is very easy to make though and tastes even better.

Its like a red pepper, chilli and paprika pesto.

http://www.canaryforum.com/mojo.html I add a half chilli with the peppers. It takes less than 30 minutes from start to finish.

“Yes! I would definitely like to aquire some of this excellent sauce. Our friend Roisin has some, so perhaps it’s available in Galway, where she lives? You should also try the chilli honey dressing at Skinflint, a new pizza restaurant, it’s very good. Joe, the proprieter, says they’re going to start selling it soon. Perhaps they will also sell their other condiments. Their pizzas are excellent, would you like to join me there soon, Jean?”
