I do agree Claire, I love the atmosphere of the supermarkets on the 23rd and 24th, and as I always go home to my parents for Christmas, I join them in Dunnes (and Superquinn, great for Christmas atmosphere too) just before the big day. I get my own Christmas stuff from Aldi though as I’m poorer than them, and it’s delicious 🙂
I ordered from Wines Direct last week, they’ll deliver on the 22nd. Dinner on THE DAY will be ham from local organic Castlewood farm, with veg from the market on Saturday. Couldn’t resist Stollen Bites from Lidl/Aldi. So, hooray, no big shop to be done next week. Who needs it? After all, it’s not like the shops close down for a week! Calm down! Shopping isn’t the important thing at Christmas!
Thank you for being (very willing) guinea pigs. I browsed Aldi’s brochure, but I was a bit sceptical about their meats. Although I don’t know why, they get rare reviews of the steaks and other meats all the time. The duck spring rolls will be the perfect appetizer. The main course will be salmon from Howth (Doran on the Pier) and dessert, well, I still have no idea. No big shop here, but we need gallons of milk for the little ones over 4 days
The meats are amazing, especially the steaks, and in particular the rib-eye steak. Also their meats are Irish and they seem to have a good reputation for treating their suppliers well, although I’m open to any evidence that suggests otherwise.
Peter, re-reading my post, I should have written ‘I browsed Aldi’s brochure, but I was a bit sceptical about their meats. Although I don’t know why, BECAUSE they get rare reviews’. I am not challenging your reviews of Aldi’s meats, rather, my scepticism seems to be unfounded. Sorry for the confusion. I once bought burgers and they were declared ‘juicy’ (although how can meat be ‘juicy’ still puzzles me). I don’t eat red meat so I can’t judge for myself, but their chicken breasts are free range and very good value

Dunnes for most of it. I love the atmosphere there on the 23rd.

Aldi for most things, Dunnes for what Aldi doesn’t have, all of it sprinkled with other items from Christmas markets, Polish shops etc.
