Lunch or afternoon tea: where's a good spot?
Our reader Ellen gets in touch with a very specific request. Hopefully some of you can help her out with good tips:
I’m heading out for lunch or afternoon tea on Bank Holiday Monday with a friend. We’re looking for a nice, reasonably priced hotel – or at least one that offers good value – where we can spend the afternoon; my friend much prefers to while away a few hours then in a restaurant, where you can’t really linger.
We’re based in Leopardstown but we’d be willing to head somewhere in south Dublin, the south city, or perhaps North Kildare (around Kill/ Naas). The Shelbourne has come up as an option – what are your thoughts on it? Any other recommendations?
Readers, can you help Ellen out?

Barberstown Castle do a really nice afternoon tea in their conservatory. They have comfy couches and a piano player. Its the perfect place to while away a few hours.
The Shelbourne’s lovely for afternoon tea but quite pricey by comparison!

Carton House near Maynooth is gorgeous and you can get nice bar food – which is really very tasty

Maybe the bar in Hunters Hotel near Ashford in Wicklow? Great afternoon tea …

Oh yes, definitively Carton House. The place is fantastic, at this time of the year the colours are amazing. The food is very good and the service brilliant

Kilmore Quay possibly too far for you but I was there yesterday and….well, the village is wonderful, and in the pub James Kehoe you can find excellent, delicious fresh seafood. And there is a Wooden House which is a small hotel with fresh seafood – and afternoon tea also 🙂
