I seem to recall getting it in Polish shops – I don’t recall which brand, I suspect there are a fair few available, but each one we’ve tried has been lovely.
I’d also highly recommend the horseradish & beetroot mix in a jar – delicious!
Yupii! Off to M&S today, eager to start my trying and testing period 🙂
I’ve been obsessed with mustard and wasabi for a while so horseradish seems like the natural way to go now….Looking forward to trying it in a smoked trout (from Lidl) combo.
Was watching come dine with me and this guy dug some up on the side of the road and there i was weeding on Monday and behold it was in my garden -Had some twas amazing and beats any Jar!
Nice one Wendy. You can’t beat the free food. Horseradish is relatively rare in Ireland, you’ll find it more around the South-east of the country. It’s in season now until early autumn.
Here’s a recipe for home-made horseradish sauce:
3 tablespoons peeled and grated horse-radish, 1/4 teaspoon mustard powder, 3 tablespoons thick cream.
The horseradish might make you cry as you peel it. Leave the root to dry for a while.
Mix it all together.
Or try this recipe which, as I write this, is making me retch. It’s for the VERY brave. Some people will LOVE it, but a disclaimer – don’t blame me if you get food poisoning from the raw egg!:
Tartar Sandwich:
Butter a slice of rye bread, spread with a layer of raw beef. Put a raw egg in the centre surrounded by a circle of finely chopped onion, and top with grated horseradish and a few capers.
BLEURGH!

Grow your own! Go to: http://www.herbexpert.co.uk/GrowingHorseradish.html for growing advice and how to make creamed horseradish. Cheaper and better than shop bought.
