Price of Tea Rises

Spot the teapot

We’re used to moaning about coffee here on CheapEats, but perhaps we’re neglecting our true heritage. Ireland is a nation of tea-drinkers, and it’s time that the teapot on our wallpaper (look closely!) got some attention.

Dry weather in India, Sri Lanka, and Kenya has led to a global shortage of 90,000 tonnes of tea, and that’s going to raise prices. At the same time, demand for tea is increasing across the world, with green and pu-erh tea leading the charge.

It’s a bummer to hear that one of life’s best – and most taken for granted – little luxuries is going to rise in price, just when we probably all need a cuppa. Boo!

Tea drinkers of CheapEats, raise your voices! Have you noticed an increase in the price of tea yet? What’s your favourite tea tipple: black, green, white, peppermint? And besides your own sofa, where’s the best spot for a cuppa in Ireland?

  1. I favour Earl Grey, Fair Trade, preferably organic. I don’t think tea is expensive, compared to same quality coffee. What drives me mad is being charged 2.50 euros for a cheap tea bag in hot water. And Ireland is not the worst there, I’ve been charged more than 3 euros in Europe for tea.
There is a lovely shop on Exchequer street in Dublin: Le Palais des Thes. They do a beautiful Earl Grey, but also a lot of less well known teas and you can sample them

  2. I adore vanilla tea. Twinings do a gorgeous vanilla and coconut tea and Java republic have a lovely vanilla and rooibos version. Both are a little pricey, but are very comforting.

  3. I know it’s considered sacrilege by many, but for those of you who prefer decaf tea of an evening – Dunnes have a €1.50 voucher offer on Lyon’s decaf bags at the moment…
