Tins of Beans: €10.30 at Tesco?

Posted by: peter in: Bad Value | Queries

€10.30 per tin? Surely some mistake...

€10.30 per tin at Tesco? Surely some mistake...

Another interesting email about Tesco, this time from CheapEats reader Bill Gunter:

“I noticed more than a month ago that the Tesco at the Omni Park in Santry, Dublin was selling Epicure organic cannellini beans for €10.30 per tin. When I asked about they told me “if that’s what the price tag says then that must be what it costs.” I emailed Tesco corporate about it and they said that the price did indeed seem high and that the shop would take the beans off the shelves until the proper price could be determined. Two weeks later the beans are still on the shelf at the same price.

tescoirelandLast night I was in the Tesco in Clare Hall, Dublin and they’re selling Epicure organic mung beans for the same price! A friend contacted Epicure directly and their suggested retail price for the beans is €1.04 (this may be the non-organic price, though).

I was thinking that this was simply a data-entry error, but I’m not so sure now. Has anyone else found Tesco selling beans at a 10x markup?

I’m sure some poor soul has just popped them in the trolley during a big shop and not even noticed. That’s why I scan my receipt with an eagle-eye before I leave the shop.

This article made me recall my last visit to Tesco Clarehall. A couple in front at the till paid for their goods and off they went, only to come back a minute later. A box of ice lollys (del monte i think) had gone through as €25. All innocent mistakes ?…………

Ah ah ah…. I had the same “smart” answer a few weeks back about a box of tea bags at 25.30 euros. When I questionned the man at the customer service desk, he went on to check in the computer and lo and behold! his answer was “the computer says soooooo”. I didn’t know whether he was taking the piss or just plain stupid. I emailed the general customer service and it appeared that some of their prices had been “mysteriously” multiplied by 10…. I had noticed a couple of other similar, very obvious, errors, like a tin of peas at 3.50 euros and a bar of Milka chocolate at 9.50 euros….. A few weeks later, the prices were still the same.

Slightly O/T, but Tesco @ the Omni Park is just dire - completely disorganised and forever moving items to different shelves. The staff seem completely disinterested in helping customers.

Laura, you’ve got that right. My office is in the Omni, though, so it’s the most convenient shop for me. They’re always out of something I want, though. Wretched company.

Every time I go in lately it seems like they’ve discontinued another brand that I want. And the quality of fruit, veg and bread just isn’t there anymore in Tesco Celbridge Their customer service people are not nice to deal with either. I’m going to pledge here that on Sunday I will drive that little bit further and go to Dunnes for my weekly shop.

Fully agree with the above comments, I have switched from Tesco to combination of Dunnes & Supervalu. I found in Tesco a lot of the brands I like have been discontinued, also their special offers work out dearer than doubling up on single items, etc. Always spend more in Tesco then Dunnes or Supervalu.

Last Saturday in Tesco Drogheda, a €2.10 packet of snowball sweets came up as €20 on the self service till. I told the manager and he said that they have not been scanning properly and took them off us.

It makes me wonder why they were not taken off the shelf in the first place. I noticed because I was only buying a couple of items, but somebody who is spending a couple of hundred quid might not.

Surely this can’t be an attempted robbery?

To all you tesco customers please remember that every time you shop there you are helping to ensure that irish jobs are lost, irish farmers are getting low prices and that the taxpayers [that's you] are not getting as much tax as they would from smaller shops.
also the reason that the staff are completely disinterested and the prices don’t get changed is that they don’t care about you, because their bosses don’t care about them.
I know what you are thinking - they are cheap- but remember there is no such thing as cheap food in the long run - you will end up paying for it indirectly e.g. you have to travel further to get there, you spend more time there, you spend more money throwing out the waste, the farmers and the workers that would be employed if small shops were supported are on the dole - you pay!
thanks for listenning!
