Christmas shoppers flock to €2 stores

Posted by: rercy in: Good Value | Recession | Shop Reviews

684743_16479080I tuned into the Pat Kenny show yesterday to hear the AMAZING I Draw Slow being interviewed. Okay, okay, I’m shamelessly plugging my husband’s band, but there was also a segment about how this will be the most frugal Christmas for many. As a result, people are hitting the €2 shops for the first time, with an increase in the middle class heading to these discount stores.

I’ve always avoided these shops as they look like a tacky bomb went off in them. But a bargain is a bargain so I thought I’d pop into one and see what deals are available. I was quite surprised by what you can get for your buck and not just crap quality rubbish.

Among the usual tat were plenty of well known brands of chocolates, canned goods, cosmetics, household goods, home-wares, electronics and even well known medicines for a lot less than you would pay in supermarkets.

On the Pat Kenny show, some of the €2 deals included: a radio with headphones, desk lamp, USB powered mini vacuum cleaner for cleaning your computer and a mouth piece for using on Skype – all for only €2.

Are you be tempted by €2 shops?

I always shop in €2 stores. Shampoo, cleaning cloths, chopping boards, cotton wool, crappy sweeties loads of stuff. They’re great places.

… wanted to replace the batteries in the smoke alarms in the house.

€5.50 for one branded 9v battery in SuperQuinn

vs three for €2 in the €2 store…..

no brainer

I’d stay away from the electronic stuff in those shops – none of it is in anyway good quality. You’ll end up throwing it away. But, the E2 shops can be great value for other things, batteries included.

Short answer: yes! €2 shops are great for things like name brand shampoo and shower gel…often the only difference between them and the same item for €4 in Boots is that the ones in the €2 shop have the instructions in Turkish or something. Luckily, I managed to memorise the hair washing process a long time ago so can manage without. :)

i have to agree with joanne , yet a headset for 2 euro can serve me for 2-3 months, which is the exact period that I get from any headset I buy from argus for less than 20 euro (you ll never find any thing less than 10)…
so in a way its still good value for money.
