Our friend Rebecca, who previously reviewed Dillinger’s in Ranelagh for us, gets back in touch with a tip about a new deli in Dublin’s Harold’s Cross:

mayfield-deliLast week I got taken to lunch in the recently opened Mayfield Deli and Eatery. Situated between Harold’s Cross and Terenure, this lovely little place is perfect for a spot of delicious fare. The premises used to be a butcher’s and they’ve incorporated the old butcher hooks and wall tiles, prettying it up with plenty of colourful china and lovely bijou bits and bobs.

Mayfield is like a miniature version of Avoca, with sandwiches, soups, stews, savoury tarts and lots of sweet baked goods. They have a small selection of artisan foods on sale as well, including items like handmade fudge and elderflower presse. My boyfriend Jim had a ham, gruyere and artichoke focaccia, which was of epic proportions given the €5.50 price tag. With thick slices of real ham, it was a massive hit and looked divine. I went for the Poached Salmon Salad Nicoise (€7.95). A different take on an old favourite, I was impressed with the size, the fresh ingredients and delicious dressing. We shared a Pear and Raspberry Upside-Down Cake, a snip at €3.50. It was so moist and tasty we had to polish it off, despite being stuffed.

Most places in Dublin let me down on the coffee front but I had a great cappuccino (€2.50), and Jim got a pot of tea, (€2.40). He was delighted to find that it was Suki loose-leaf tea. Tea drinkers are often less spoiled than coffee-fiends like myself, so this was a particularly nice touch, and Jim assured me it tasted a treat. They sell boxes of Suki in store as well. All the food on the menu is available to take out at a cheaper rate and they do a fantastic deal on any sandwich with soup for €8.50 to eat in or €7.95 to take out. This is real high quality: everything is homemade and the portions are huge, so these prices are a real bargain.

Thanks Rebecca!  I will definitely have to check this out.

The Mayfield Deli and Eatery is at 7 Terenure Road North.

  1. Went there twice for lunch last week- loved it. It has a real neighbourhood vibe and the owners are welcoming and diligent: water poured from jugs on table when you sit down, open to variations on a dish and the lemon and poppyseed cake it the best dessert I have had this year so far. Can’t reccommend this place enough.

  2. Had lunch here today and it was just glorious. Had the Cashel Blue, Spinach and Bacon pie served with crusty bread and side salad for 8 euro. all cakes there were only 3.50 and they were fab. Great spot great value…

  3. Love Mayfields, great to see someone doing well when it’s deserved.
