There’s also a wine festival with many half-price deals, running from Friday May 7 – Tuesday May 11. The Tesco Finest dinner for two, meanwhile, includes a choice of main, choice of sides, choice of deserts, and a bottle of wine or juice for the grand total of €10.

Now, I don’t want to appear to single Tesco out for opprobrium. But we get a lot of emails from readers here, and a huge amount of them… single Tesco out for opprobrium. The latest comes from our reader Anne, who says:

On Friday I picked up 2 packs of Tesco  own brand Healthy Living Cholestrol Reducing Drinks. Individual price 1.69. However, each pack had a special offer imprinted on the carton ‘buy 2 for 2.50’. When I checked my receipt I noticed that I had been charged 1.69 x 2 and not 2.50 as advertised. When I queried this at the customer service desk they drew my attention to the special offer (this is not a sticker but part of the print of the carton) which is only available in Uk and it is 2.50 sterling. I was furious as the pound symbol is tiny – I wonder why?! No offer to refund the difference either. I told them that I would check the shelves Mon/Tue and expect them to be fully removed.

Poor old Tesco. Like the rest of us, they’re just trying to scrape together the cents to make an honest living. Have any readers noticed any similarly misleading deals in Tesco or, even better, any other supermarket?

  1. Hate Tesco. I was in Tesco the other day getting a packet of 200 grams of prawns and it had a sticker saying “half price” on it. It rang up as full price, so I stopped the attendant and she went off with my prawns to investigate. She then came back and said that 4 euro WAS half price, because normally the handful of prawns was 8 euro. Needless to say, there’s no way that’s possible, and I just put them back.

  2. the staff is either plain ignorant…. or very clever. Who would try hard when you can just get away with “it’s the price on the computer”…. That’s how you end up with prices like 9.99 for a bar of chocolate or 24.90 for a box of tea bags…. Investigate? Why???
I can’t count the number of times when the price was “half price” and showed (eg.) “was 1.89…. now 1.89”. Herg??? The best one ever was “half price…. was 4.75, now 3.75″… Some people need to seat their maths cert again.
And…. on a (rare) visits recently, I’ve noticed that most prices are way up, actually more than what they were before the “change for good” campain

  3. I havent shopped in Tesco for a year now and am rage free. Dunnes is no picnic, but at least you can reason with them!

  4. I was in Tesco yesterday, i have always bought 4 packs of ryvita crackers per week which were 88 cent per pack, yesterday the price was €2.59 per pack, the manager stood closeby so i went to him to query the price hike, he said they were on special last week, i told him i buy them every week and since the change b4 x mas they have always been that price. He abruptly turned and said ”well that’s the price of them now”. Needless to say i went to dunnes and got them for 99 cent per pack and will shop there going forward, but not before i make a written complaint to Tesco. What cost less than €4 last week now costs €10.36. My advice to anyone is check the prices of goods in Tesco as they are on the rise in a big way.

  5. Recently (two days ago) I bought 3 “not from concentrate” 1 litre cartons of of Tesco own brand juice with a buy 3 for 4 euro label on them. After checking my receipt I found that the offer wasn’t taken into account. I complained and got my money back, no questions asked. I then noticed that another buy 3 for X euro wasn’t correctly calculated in the bill but it was for a lot less so I let it slide.

Moral of tale: pay particular attention to buy X for Y euro offers at Tesco.

I also notice that these errors vary from store to store with certain Tescos regularly making these “mistakes” while others have never done (in my experience).
