Food Education Resources

runner2A few weeks ago, we started a list of resources for children, parents, teachers, and anybody who wants to learn a bit more about healthy eating and growing your own food. Food doesn’t get much cheaper – or better for you – than that.

Teaching Resource #2: Irish Seedsavers

Irish Seedsavers is an absolutely essential organisation dedicated to the preservation and growth of traditional fruit, vegetable, and flower varieties. Indeed, it’s hard to think of what could be more important than ensuring the preservation of seeds, which are increasingly coming under threat.

irishseedBetween April and the end of June, parents and teachers can bring children to see the work carried out at their organic heritage garden. In the process, they learn about how food grows. Some seeds are saved to grow new plants, such as peas, cucumber, tomato or pepper, while others are sown for the summer crop.

cucumberseedsSeedsavers provides valuable guidance to teachers and schools looking to establish a school garden, with information on how the garden can be integrated into the school curriculum.

Wildlife gardening, school tours, and summer courses for primary school teachers are among the other offerings at Seedsavers. For more information click on the education page at www.irishseedsavers.ie or call 061921866
