Can you handle more sweets – even at half price?

ferrero-rocherThis will make me sound like a pig. A few weeks ago, my shelves were groaning under the weight of tins of sweets, boxes of crisps, and large packets of crackers. It seemed like a bottomless pit.

But, like Christmas, it fades away before you notice. Yesterday was my first big post-Christmas shop.

Feeling guilty about the amount of refined sugar I had eaten, I stocked up on fresh fruit and vegetables – I’ll be posting some ideas for healthy and revitalising veggie meals later.

But I couldn’t help but notice the bright red signs in Dunnes around the confectionary section. Of course, they’re trying to flog all their own unwanted Christmas leftovers.

If you’re a home that always has something sweet tucked away, now is a good time to stock up for the coming months. Even if you plan to have a healthy January, you can always store it away… if you have the willpower.

Lindt Milk Chocolate Santas were €3.69 each or 3 for €6; tins of Quality Street reduced from €9.99 to €6.99; Jacobs biscuits for cheese were down from €5.65 to €2.16; Ferrero Rocher were priced €5.79 or 2 for €9, and McVities chocolate digestives were half price. I also noticed Kellogg’s cereals were 3 for 2, while Roma Pasta sauces were half price.

My basket contained none of these goods (ok, maybe some chocolate Santas), and I didn’t notice much to entice New Year, well-intentioned shoppers looking to eat healthily.

Are there better deals on sweets and treats elsewhere? And, to assuage our guilt, have you noticed any stores luring us in with bargains on healtheir treats?
