Conor Pope taste tests Feta Cheese in Pricewatch today, with the varieties from M&S and Aldi coming in as the highest scorers.  Feta is one of my favourite things, and I have Greek Salad at least once a week.  By far the best feta I’ve ever had comes from Camden Halal in Camden St, where you can buy a huge block from their deli counter for about €1.30.  It’ll keep for nearly a week in your fridge if you seal it in an airproof container.

Greek Salad

Boy oh boy do I love Greek salad. I usually leave out the black olives as I think the simple feta, cucumber and tomato combination works really well, but the classic version would include them.

Ingredients

  • greek-salad10 cherry tomatoes, halved
  • ¼ cucumber, cut into small wedges
  • 1 piece feta cheese to taste (about 50g per person if you’re unsure)
  • 50g pitted black olives
  • Thinly sliced red onion
  • Olive oil
  • Black pepper

Instructions

Put the tomatoes, olives and cucumber in a bowl. Crumble over the feta cheese and toss together.  Lay the red onion on top, pour over a tablespoon or two of olive oil, and grate a generous amount of black pepper on top.

This salad is also lovely on bruschetta, or stuffed into a toasted wholemeal pitta bread.

  1. roasted veg … sprinkle with chunks of feta for the last 5 min of roasting and serve with cous cous .. delicious !

  2. That’s good value in Camden St: I paid €3.86 for about 100g of feta in SuperValu recently. It definitely tends to be that bit pricier in supermarkets.

  3. I went to Camden St specifically to by this so-talked-about feta and was bitterly disapointed. I couldn’t see any so I asked the person working there, who gave me this tetrapak thing saying it was the feta I was looking for. I wasn’t sure but bought it. Of course it wasn’t and now I don’t feel like going back for more, since I feel he wasn’t completely right with me….. 🙁
This feta you guys talk about, is it sold by weight, on demand, or is it prepacked??

  4. Hi Liana. You were given Bad Cheese Guidance. The good stuff is sold by weight from their deli counter, just inside the front door. Maybe that which I feared has come to pass: they’re all sold out of it due to me flapping my big gob about it here on this site. Oh no! Listons, which is right next door, often has the same stuff, so give them a try if Camden Halal are all sold out.

  5. Thanks Jean, I shall persevere!! 🙂

  6. They also sell feta by weight at Spiceland, just down the road. I haven’t tried it though, still working away at my camden halal stash!

  7. spinach leaves, pre pack beetroot, toasted pumpkin seeds and feta, all with some oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. This is pretty much my favourite salad at the moment. It works as a light meal too. And so quick.
