Home-made bread: is it worth it?

homemade-brown-breadIrish mammies are masters of multi-tasking, as we know. From speaking with a mouthful of pins on the phone on their shoulder  to turning off and on a faulty computer as they boil a chicken. It’s all go. The one thing they’re really good at is making brown bread when the oven is on. I’ve always admired this and thought I’d get my act together and give it a go.  The result is delicious and money-saving.

This  great recipe from Bord Bia is foolproof and healthy.  I nerdily did the costings and it works out at €1.34 a loaf. McCambridge”s brown soda loaf is €1.79 in my local major supermarket.  My family go through three a week so that would be  €209.04 per year, a saving of  €70.20 on buying it ready-made.

However, the cost of the oven is not included. This adds €62.40 (based on 42c per hour to heat oven). So you’d save just €7.80 if you turned on the oven especially. So throw it in with your dinner, like a clever mammy. And sure, don’t they freeze wonderfully.

Christmas shopping at Aldi and Lidl

Aldi's Luxury All Over Iced Christmas Cake: €9.99

Aldi’s Luxury All Over Iced Christmas Cake: €9.99

Liveline was hopping this week as angry farmers decried below-cost selling of fruit and veg in Aldi and Lidl. Between now and Christmas, Aldi is selling a 1kg bag of carrots, a 1.5kg bag of potatoes, and a 500g bag of sprouts for six cent each. Meanwhile, Lidl will sell a one-kilo bag of potatoes, onions, and carrots and 500g bags of sprouts and turnips for five cent each. So, pretty much, free.

It’s hard not to feel some sympathy for farmers, who say that they are taking the hit. The supermarkets, on the other hand, say that they, not farmers, are taking the hit. The Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney, is likely to introduce legislation to protect vegetable growers. In the middle of all, the consumer: who can blame them for bringing the Christmas bill down a bit?

There’s a lot of other decent offers and good value in both Aldi and Lidl. Christmas is a time of cheese, and I’m a big fan of Aldi’s Specially Selected cheeses: Tipperary Blue, Camembert, and Oakwood Smoked Cheddar are all €2.99 each; they go well with the Specially Selected Cracker selection (€1.29). Smoked salmon, a Christmas favourite, is €2.99 at Aldi.

And, in both places, you’ll be hard pressed to find better wine deals in both Lidl and Aldi, which we’ve written about before.

What do you make of the ongoing price wars? Where will you do your Christmas shopping this year?

BBQ Dublin: Pitt Bros vs Bison Bar

Holy smokes! A decent BBQ restaurant has been high up the wishlist for many years, and now Dublin has four: the Bison Bar on Wellington Quay, Pitt Bros on George’s Street, the Aussie BBQ on Richmond Street (I’ve yet to pull some pork from the Aussie BBQ but, based on this review from Niall Harbison of Lovin’ Dublin, I’m not inclined to), and Asador, a little outside the city (I’ve heard nothing but praise).

Bison's Brisket Tray

Bison’s Brisket Tray

Within the last two weeks, I’ve stuffed my face in both Bison and Pitt Bros. And, much as competition is to be welcomed, I’ll come right out and say that there’s little or no point in going to Pitt Bros while, just three minutes away, Bison Bar exists. Maybe that’s unfair, but it’s difficult for BBQ enthusiasts not to compare two places in such close proximity, both serving almost identical Texan BBQ food.

It’s not that Pitt Bros isn’t nice: it is. In fact, it’s pretty delicious. Pitt Bros more or less copied the Bison formula, before nipping up the road to base the rest of their venture on Asian restaurant Neon, from the layout and design right down to the free whipped ice-cream.  Imitation is flattery, or theft – you decide.

Both Bison and Pitt Bros serve pulled pork, brisket, sausage, ribs and chicken. In both places, each main comes with two sides, but Pitt Bros has slightly more choice of sides. Prices are the same, although extra sides in Pitt Bros are €3.50 compared to €3.95 in Bison. Continue Reading →

Preview: Rozanne Stevens Cookery Course

relish book chapters02.inddA couple of Saturdays ago I hauled myself out of bed, ate breakfast on autopilot and headed out to Rozanne Stevens’ An Introduction to Healthy Eating. It  incorporated recipes from ‘A Month of Meals’ and ‘Green Living’- two weekend courses happening in the new year. I needn’t have bothered with breakfast as we were given granola, pancakes, coffee, pomegranate iced tea…

Broadcaster and cookbook author Rozanne emphasises healthy food inspired by world cuisines. Using a few key authentic ingredients she gives local produce what she calls “the ish factor”. This is basically cooking the gist of a dish without a huge shopping list. Her smoked paprika maple salmon and cashew cumin carrots were pretty much that, but tasted fantastic. Continue Reading →
