Our reader Ciaran emailed us recently to ask if we’d seen frozen strawberries anywhere. I’ve seen frozen berries in numerous supermarkets, but they’re usually cranberries, blueberries, raspberries or bags of mixed berries that only include a few strawberries at most. However, I was in Fallon & Byrne yesterday buying some middle-class treats and saw that they have bags of frozen strawberries, along with other varieties of berries. Like a fool, I forgot to write down the price, and then did loads of other shopping that pushed the exact figure out of my head – but it was somewhere in the €4-€5 range.
While strawberries are in season, you could always try freezing your own. All you need to do is:
- Wash and dry the berries. Discard any damaged or mouldy berries. Cut off the stems and leaves.
- Place the berries on a baking sheet so that there is space between each one. Put the sheet in the fridge for about an hour, then in the freezer overnight.
- Once they are frozen, you can put them all into a freezer bag or a tupperware container.
