Special Offers at Superquinn

superquinnMy parents did the Christmas shopping at Superquinn, with the very important assistance of my sister Barbara and I. Just to make sure, you know, that they got enough tins of chocolate, boxes of crisps, and packets of sweets. And enough cheese to stink out the fridge.

Barbara, an avid Tesco fan, commented that she really noticed the price difference and that Superquinn was significantly more expensive. Out of sheer laziness I occasionally shop here; there’s one on the way home from work and another just around the corner. Much as I like the quality of their fresh food, I do find it that bit dearer. What do you think?

Special offers as part of a “New Year Sale” include:

  • Fruit and veg including potatoes (2.2kg), 2 turnips, carrots (1kg), mushrooms (200g), tomatoes (6pk), onions (1kg), two peppers – all €1
  • Kellogg’s Special K (500g), Crunchy Nut (500g), and Cornflakes (1kg) – any two for €5 (save €2.16)
  • Brady Family Deli style ham (10 slices, 200g) – was €3.99, now €1.99

I’m making Jacqui’s simple cherry tomato sauce with spaghetti for dinner, so I’ll stop here on the way home later for some fruit and veg. My cupboard is reasonably full otherwise, so I’ll be sure to keep my blinkers on.

  1. I did the bulk of my Christmas shopping at Dunnes, and yes, I am ashamed to admit it, but…. at Tesco. I went to Superquinn for the fresh items that are considered as “luxurious” like cheeses (they have an excellent selection of Irish farmhouse cheeses), biscuits and speciality meats (quails). But for the general groceries, they are far too expensive for my budget. The yogurts I buy for my daughter are 1.75 at Dunnes and 2.19 at Superquinn, for instance

  2. I cant say as there is no Superquinn in Cork but I thought a golden rule of food advertising is to avoid using blue as it suppresses appetite.

  3. Ha ha Conan.Well Benjamin Black drives an 80s Saab then. I’ve seen him a few times, moyiesng around. He’s quite short. You kind of want to pick up and hug him.
