Peter’s Pricewatch Article: Best Value Outside Supermarkets?

Posted by: jean in: Bargains & Special Offers

Peter made passing reference yesterday to his article getting deals on food that appeared in this week’s Pricewatch in the Irish Times; but I think it’s worth a post of its own.  In it he visits a range of retailers – ‘euro’ shops, ethnic shops and market stalls – to see how their prices compare to those in the supermarkets.  The results are really interesting and there’s some good tips on picking up brand name items in slightly unexpected places.

What are your favourite non-supermarket spots for picking up bargains?  I live and work in Dublin 8 and there’s great value to be had from the stalls and shops of Meath Street and Thomas Street, particularly on things like cleaning products.  The ’99c’ chain of euro shops sell my favourite brand name fizzy pop at only €2.50 for six cans, well over a euro cheaper than they charge in supermarkets and convenience chains.  Read the piece, tell us what you think and share your tips!

I realise it’s not exactly foodstuff but it’s food-related: brand dishwasher tabs are usually priced insanely high in supermarkets but the euro shop on Thomas Street beside spar has (or had, the last time I went) boxes of 20 Finish powerball tabs for €1.50 each. I bought three which is over two months of dishwashing for the princely sum of €4.50.
