The Green Party’s Trevor Sargent added his voice to calls for a food ombudsman this week, along with Andrew Doyle of Fine Gael, who said that a ‘sheriff’ is needed to police the ‘wild west’ of the retail market. Sargent refers to the ‘intimidation’ of small suppliers by grocery chains. I’ve heard similar claims: that certain large supermarket chains abuse their position by making unfair demands on suppliers. I can’t go into details as it’s all hearsay and we could have our pants sued off, but it’s good to see the situation being addressed in the Dail.
