The Highs and Lows of Centra

centraOne Sunday last year, I swung by a Centra for chicken breasts to throw in a Patak’s curry. It was definitely the vilest chicken I’ve ever eaten. Bleurgh.

It’s half-price there at the moment. Don’t. However, they’ve a few bargains and special offers worth keeping an eye out for, most notably six free-range eggs for €1.

Yesterday, a horrible day of moving house, picking up trailers and carrying pianos in the rain, I very reluctantly ate a crispy roll in Centra (Roundwood, Co. Wicklow). I’ve had a dislike of convenience store deli rolls and sandwiches since I worked in a Londis during my student years, and most packaged sandwiches taste as though they’ve had the flavour sucked out by a vacuum cleaner. You buy them because you’re on the run and you’re eating purely for functional reasons. But this roll – I won’t bore you with the contents of it – was great. It hit the spot, bang on target. Filling and delicious, €3.19. And, come to think of it, these deli rolls are often very satisfying…

Where was I before I got distracted by sandwiches? Oh yes, check out Spar’s crappy special offers here, while Londis have quite a few goods offers here.

  1. Pataks?

Here’s an easy way to make a delicious chicken rogan josh, and none of your ready-made pastes.

    Bock’s chicken curry.

  2. I know, I know, but it was a very long day after the Castlepalooza festival, and I had nothing in the house, and the supermarket was completely out of the way. Patak’s is the best of a bad lot for ready made shop bought pastes.
