I won”t be lured to Dunnes Stores by their main special offers this week:
- St. Bernard Concentrated Orange Juice – reduced from 85c to 65c
- St. Bernard Baked Beans – reduced from 25c to 17c
- St. Bernard 500g Mild White/ Red cheddar – reduced from €3.29 to €2.29
- St. Bernard Back Rashers – reduced from €1.99 to €3.45
- St. Bernard 12pk eggs – reduced from €1.59 to €0.99
Very cheap food, but very poor quality. The reductions on these few items are very small indeed.
I’ve nothing against Dunnes, and I think that their Dunnes Stores branded food is often great. But I don’t think the St. Bernard brand – their version of Tesco Value – represents good value at all. Then again, I don’t think Tesco Value is actually good value either. They’re both a false economy. For just a few euro more, you can have much nicer, nutritious and enjoyable non-watery rashers, non-battery eggs, or decent other foods, or get some of the quality unbranded products in Lidl or Aldi.
But perhaps I’m not giving them a chance. Do you think the St. Bernard and Tesco Value brands represent good value for money? I’d love to hear more opinions on this.

You’re very topical here Peter: Channel 4’s Dispatches programme is covering budget food lines and the way that they’re made this Thursday:
