  1. My thoughts? Well, i am not so sure of buying meat or items of food online. I prefer to go and see the item that i am buying, see it before i buy, especially checking the food items to amke sure it is ok. Meat itself could be good but i always prefer to check the item i want to see amount of fat in it, quality of the meat, etc.

However, i did do an order for christmas dinner from M&S, but its the only time i ordered food online.

  2. I have no problem purchasing online just haven’t ever considered purhcasing meat online. Although my husband and I are big meat eaters, I actually wouldn’t be great at choosing a ‘good’ cut of meat even if I could see it, I rely on the reputation of the butcher I’m buying from. So in that respect, if the online butcher had a good reputation I’d give it a go and if I was happy with the meat then I’d buy again. For me, service is very important – maybe a suggestion on what to do with the meat, cooking advice, a friendly and professional attitude etc. – this would all be as important to me as the product itself.

  3. i have never bought food online. I would love to have a local butcher nearby that i could trust , and i would also love a veg shop .. both of which stay open so that the working peeps like myself could pop in on the way home and not have to buy everything for the week on a saturday morning … there is def a niche in the market for a butchers and veg shop that are beside each other and stay open until 8pm !
because i cannot find this .. i am forced to go to a supermarket on the occasions when i am not forward thinking enough to have food in ..

  4. I have yet to but food online but it is something that I would definitely be interested in trying. I work long hours so it would be a great time saver for me as I could purchase online while in work. I would be wary about purchasing meat without seeing what I am actually getting but if the butcher had a good reputation and the site got good feedback I would have no problem buying meat online.

  5. This is an interesting one. I kinda like the idea of this but I reckon you’d need to try it a couple of times before you’d begin to trust it. I’d like if you could order a couple of things (i.e. not have to spend €50) to try it out first. I commend the novel business strategy though. Hope it takes off!

  6. I’ve never bought food online but I would be open to trying it. I’d imagine it’d be alot handier than having to drag myself to the butcher every few days. It’d also make me plan my menus in advance so could save me money and time. The only thing that would worry me would be not being able to examine the meat before buying, it’d only take one bad order to send me back to my local butcher.

  7. I can understand why you would be somewhat reluctant to buy meat online but I can assure of your Johns meat. I have to be honest that I do know John but I have tasted steaks in many country’s around the world and in many fine restaurants but this meat is sublime. I have purchased steaks, ribs, chicken, pork etc., from Johns Meat Co and have yet to be dissapointed, plus he delivers it. Also the savings are amazing. That said, I am a friend of his but would still not add my name to this thread if I had not bought his meat before and at this stage I have purchased from the website 5 times!!!

  8. I’ve never bought food online. I would be worried about buying meat or other fresh produce online – I would like to be able to see it before buying it and would be afraid that you wouldn’t be given the freshest piece of meat. It would take some good recommendations from friends etc. to convince to change from my local butcher.

  9. I have never bought food online before,I have bought mnay things online before but not meat- id like to be assured of good packaging and handling during delivery. A FRIENDLY SERVICE AND A SMILING DELIVERY MAN NEVER HURTS:)

However it would save a lot of time, im sick of running down town to grab some mince (because the butchers mince is the only one they will eat)

  10. I would be interested in buying online but more so for knowing I was getting an organic/free range product than just a cheaper product. I do tend to bulk buy my meat though because i live on the other side of the city from the good organic butchers in Terenure so if I could get it delivered instead it would save me a considerable amount of hassle. When it comes to meat though I’m a firm believer of better quality, less often.

  11. Hi, I have never bought meat, or any other food online. My first thought would be to freshness, although alot of people buy from Tesco etc. online. I’m not sure it would be for me though.

  12. I’ve never bought food online, and if I were to, I’d say meat would be the last thing I’d buy. Meat varies in terms of quality so much and I’m so fussy when it comes to fat and always filter for the purest cuts, I wouldn’t trust someone else to do it! I’m also skeptical as to the quality of the transportation… something as delicate as meat I prefer to pick up myself.

  13. I don’t usually go for buying food online (the Superquinn offer on this site a couple of weeks ago being the first time) – I like to choose the produce I’m buying, most particularly in the case of fresh fruit & veg. I would never buy meat online from a supermarket, though I think I would have more faith in a real butcher… partially because it’s their trade and they’d have more understanding/grá for it, and partially for the reason someone alluded to above, which is that if the delivered wasn’t top-quality it would be terrible for business. I’ll have a browse through John’s site, and I hope the idea takes off for him.

  14. I’ve been tempted, but so far have only done my main shopping online occasionally, never bought from specialist shops…I like the idea but usually feel a bit afraid of going ahead, as I think quantities for savings have to be too big for my household…

  15. i wouldn’t be a bid fan to be honest of the idea. buying meat online. it would have to be fantasitic value and even then i’d try it only as a start. plus i don’t know how much i like freezing meat ( i presume there is a delivery charge, so i’d feel compelled to buy a large amount)

  16. I have never bought food online, but am intrigued by your site. I will definitely consider it in the future, it looks good!

  17. I’ve never bought meat online – I think I prefer to see exactly what I’m buying. But I’m pretty open-minded and if I knew that the meat was Irish, I think I could be tempted

  18. I’d love to buy meat online. Only real difficulty is the amount of meat I eat in a week is very small. With only an ice box above my fridge means the quantities I’d generally buy would be very small. If I won the voucher, I’d just have to throw a big dinner party 🙂

  19. I’d love to give John’s meat a try..I’ll send back a review if I win

  20. I have bought food online before but not fresh meat – however, I regularly telephone an order for meat to a specific butcher, because I know and trust him, so think that there is no reason why it would not work.

  21. Why not give buying online a chance but just like everything else if it didn’t live up to expectations you don’t give repeat custom. If the quality is there it doesn’t really matter how it gets to your table!

  22. I’ve bought sweets online before, so it would probably be hypocritical of me to say no to buying meat online. I think it’s just the fact that it’s so…perishable…that is a little off putting. Having said that, my first mental image is of the post man tossing a rump roast through the mail slot. I’m guessing the meat is delivered directly by the company?…and there’s no delivery charge?? If this is the case, I’d be well up for it. Perfect for a bbq.

I’m also a little shocked to find out how much my local supervalu are milking me for my money…oh dear.

  23. I would like to try buying meat online if I could trust it would arrive correctly and safely chilled and that the expiry/best before date are trustworthy.

  24. hmmm suppose i have done it as part of an online shop with SuperQuinn / Tesco – but have changed my habits recently and now only (try to) purchase organic / free range….. it would be something to consider

  25. When I first read the post and visited John’s website, I was tempted to place a large order there and then. Site looks great, produce looks good, prices seem keen.

A few difficulties – I work 9 to 5. My letterbox is only so big. Leaving a cooler outside the door wouldn’t work, and I’d hate to impose on the neighbours to accept delivery.

I suppose I could get cooler delivered to my workplace, and then I could lug it home on my bike, but that kinda defeats the purpose. That’s what I do when I make time to go to the shops. It would be a massive time and cost saving I reckon to have it delivered.

Would John take a spare key and drop a cooler inside the door for me? Is that a bit too casual and informal an arrangement? It might win a loyal customer…. especially if he did the dishes and hung up some laundry too. Thanks John! (in anticipation)

  26. Although I purchased food online before, I don’t like to buy meat this way – I prefer to see it first.

  27. Vegetarians don’t know what there missing. I love meat, all meat. I have no problem buying meat online. I have bought it plenty of times from superquinn online. I am really surprised at the price difference displayed above. It’s totally worth shopping around for the best deals.

  28. I would definitely give this a go once, and if I was happy with the quality of the meat I would become a regular, I’m fussy about my meat so hopefully he will come up trumps!

  29. I used to be an online food customer of the infamous Webvan in Silicon Valley. Though the business failed spectacularly in the dot-com crash it was a thoroughly trustworthy and reliable operation. I’d be happy to buy from any such company that guarantees quality and tight delivery windows.

  30. Hmmm. My concern would also be about delivery as their is no one home routinely during the day. The delivered veg box sits on the window ledge awaiting my return from work but meat?

  31. When it comes to meat I like to be able to see it in the butcher – old fashioned I know. Also my butcher tells almost to the hour when he made his mince and offers loads of homey recipes for all the cuts on display. It is a great local service and one which you will not get in a supermarket.

  32. Gimme Gimme Gimme. Its been several moons since I caught a squirrel, stoat or weasel on the estate. Plus John’s Meat Co is one of the best names for a company I’ve ever heard.

  33. One more thing. Just checked out John’s website. 15 euros for 2.2 kgs of bacon is pretty damn good. I like the sound of John’s meat.

  34. I had a bad experience with buying online from Tesco- I had food delivered a few times, but each time there was something missing that I was still charged for. Email and phone complaints were to no avail so I just had to wave goodbye to those few euro. This had made me cautious of using similar services in the future.

  35. Hi, when ever possible I try to buy my meat from the local butcher. I prefer to be able to see the meat and to get advice if needed from the butcher – plus it nice to be able to give business locally when possible!

  36. I am using John’s Meat Co and am finding it very convenient. I just stock up my freezer, generally, once a month and I save a few quid. The steaks, goujons and gourmet burgers are very nice!!

  37. You just can’t beat meat from a good local butcher. Its better quality all because a good butcher hangs it for the right length of time before selling

  38. I always buy fresh chicken fillets from my local butcher and ask him to cut it into pieces so they are suitable to put into curries and casseroles. This saves me time and there’s less washing up!!

  39. I sometimes do my shopping online with tesco and have got organic vegetables delivered to my house also. in both cases the food was as in good condition as i would pick out myself so i would not be intimidated by shopping online.

from my brief look at John’s website i could not see the delivery times. it would be in his interest to deliver in the evenings when people are at home.

  40. I would be dubious about buying meat online – I would always rather see it and select the cut myself.

  41. Always found it difficult to buy meat online – weights confuse the bejaysus out of me. At least when I see it I know how much it is. Also the metric system – c’mon ounces and pounds? have we not moved onto grammes and kilos yet?

  42. I generally buy from local butchers or pick up deals from the supermarkets. Ive never put any thought into buying a specific food item online. However if the price is right I would consider it.

  43. I prefer to select the meat myself – that way I can ask the butcher’s advice and also take advantage of any special offers.

  44. I have bought food from Tesco online but not meat.

My concerns are that I would get the worst cuts because I cannot choose them myself. I would also be concerned about the how the meat is stored while being transported and would wonder what use by dates would be given.

Is there was a money back guarantee I would definitely give it a try once.

  45. I have bought meat online and like previous comments was disappointed with the quality of meat received, l would be dubious buying again

  46. I never liked purchasing meat from supermarket chains and have never considered buying meat on line however i could definitely be persuaded to buy online from a reputable butcher. If the meat is as tasty and succulent as it appears on the photographs online i would certainly give it a go.

  47. I haven’t bought meat online. However, I would consider it if I thought the butcher was reputable and produced an enticing “special offer” for first attempt. It may catch on if confidence is built up. Personally I would chance an offer of steak mince, sasuage, rashers, etc. For other cuts of meat I might want to hand select but this is more habit than anything else, I am open to new ideas.

  48. I think it’s a fantastic concept, I live in a business type district near the city and there isn’t a butcher anyway close to me – I almost never buy meat from supermarkets as I don’t really trust them – therefore my diet is lacking in meat a lot of the time.
The thought of having quality meat delivered to me outside of working hours at a reasonable price is very tempting indeed.

  49. Have purchased meats online from both large and small companies with mixed results and have been most impressed by the small sized butchers which in my opinion supplied better quality and great prices. In looking t the price listing of Johns products I will certainly be giving him a try.

  50. I have never bought meat online as I buy from a local butcher as much as I can. When you get to know a butcher you get advice and often price cuts etc. My concern would be about the quality and freshness of what I am buing. In particular I wouldn’t buy mince online due to a fast deterioration. Also I would have a problem with buying chicken as I will only buy organic anyway and have to look at it first. I would say though that I do think there is a market for “packaged” meats such as sausages and also theres a great market for other deli meats such as parma and serrano ham, chorizo etc.
