Takeaway Review: Buffalo 19

Posted by: peter in: Good Value | Takeaways

buffalosAn excellent takeaway has opened up in Harold’s Cross, and it’s great value too.

Buffalo’s is an “All American” takeout, serving up burgers, chips, hot dogs, wraps, onion rings, and damn fine chicken wings. Think Eddie Rocket’s at home, and like Eddie’s, you won’t find fillet of cod or battered sausage on this menu. Unusually for a takeaway, everything at Buffalo’s is made fresh to order, with the burgers shaped, seasoned and cooked on the premises. No frozen patties here.

As a result, you’ll have to wait two or three minutes longer than in most takeaways, but it’s worth every second. On my first trip there, I had the Texas Chilli Burger (€4.45), a big, fresh, juicy patty smothered in a kicking mince meat chilli sauce. This was gorgeous, and it gives the lie to the whole idea of the €10 “gourmet” burger, which I’ve always been a little suspicious about. My Buffalo burger both felt and looked home-made, and tasted all the better for it. The chips (€2.30) were really tasty, lying somewhere between thick and shoestring.

I was back there just two days later, and I sampled the Chicken Fillet burger (€5.35). This was great: a big long roll full of chicken, salad, and sauce. It was somewhat like the BK Chicken Royale, only much sloppier and a hell of a lot more enjoyable. They also do a triple decker BLT for just €3.50. When you think of the soggy, cold, overpriced BLTs you get in garages and awful cafes, this is a great deal.

Not to nitpick (me? never), but in this climate, their takeout bags let too much air in and out, which could make the food a little cold by the time you get it home. Ask, as I did, for some extra wrapping, and you’ll be met with a very friendly and obliging response by the lovely Irish owners.

This is the most interesting takeaway I’ve come across in Ireland and I can’t recommend it highly enough. There’s parking out the back so you don’t have to pay on the street, and they’ve started doing deliveries. Great value, delicious and freshly prepared food, and something very different. I can see Buffalo’s getting wings and emerging from this recession a very successful franchise.

Tip for bringing takeaways home - use one of the supermarket freezer bags that usually live in the boot of the car - keeps the food toasty hot till you get home!

A big thumbs up from me! Iv eaten here twice and its been superb on both occasions. Being a coeliac (wheat allergy)I dont often visit fast-food joints as Im weary of ingredients. The friendly staff assured me that the meat patty and chicken wings are suitable. The chips are handcut on premises and are really tasty. I will be returning for the wings very soon!

Dont forget to ask if there is any special offer. As it was a cold night I decided to take a Hot chocolate with me for the walk home and was offered a free muffin with my hot drink!

Buffalo 19…a cross between Eddie Rockets and Gourmet Burger. Not only is this new venture a breath of ‘take-away’ fresh air for Harold’s Cross but is a welcome addition to the capital’s eateries in general, its only a pity there are not more of them although the owners have a plan in mind!! The concept is simple and in keeping with that of any successful operation where food is concerned…fresh!!!

I had the fries, a steak philly sandwich and an oreo milkshake, very tasty and all suitably priced. If you are after quality fast food (and there is such a thing) then pay these guys a visit!

Big fan of this place - held off on posting this til I had been in a second time so I could comment on more than one or two of the things on the menu. First time I got the chilli burger and half onion rings / half chips. The chilli tasted homemade (as it should be) and the pattie was fresh and well seasoned. Chips were lovely and the portion size was more than fair for the price (4 euro I think).

Went back last night and tried the oreo milkshake after seeing what was written above about it. Didn’t disappoint, good to see the guy crush the cookies in front of you in a pestle & mortar - none of your fancy stuff here thank you very much. Went with the chicken wrap and chips this time. Enjoyed both, the salad in the wrap in particular was crunchy and fresh and added to it as opposed to just being filler.

Fast food isn’t rocket science and the guys who opened this place I’d imagine are keen to do the simple things right. From my two visits I have to say they they’re getting a lot right and are providing a quality product at excellent value for money. Fair play for taking a punt and doing something different in this climate. I’ll be recommending it to friends.

completely disagree. was not impressed at all. chips were cold, chicken fillet burger was basically a chicken fillet roll from spar and a bad one at that.
