My oldest friend in the world and mother of my gorgeous god-daughter Abbie, Lisa Fair, gets in touch with this reliable recommendation. I’m hearing good things from other locals:

Popped into Carrickmines at the weekend to do some shopping, but the cold drove us into the mall where we found heaven in a new little eatery called Barry and Browne’s. The fresh, homemade and well presented big portions were what my cold little family needed to heat up. The staff member who served us was so friendly, efficient and so cheerful which made the whole experience for us. When we got out bill it was so reasonable: €17.50 for two giant adult portions of heavenly food, a child’s meal and drink. Much less than we have paid before for soggy bread and buns in other cafes in Carrickmines.

The icing on the cake for us with Barry and Brownes was the kiddie’s play area tucked away in the corner of the room. This is a brilliant family/baby friend cafe with great food, friendly staff and a cash strapped friendly price tag. 10/10 in my book. I could write a full page on the positives of this place.

Readers, can you recommend any other good spots to bring kids?

  1. I’ve wanted to try this place especially since they have the kids play area… But I love the Vanilla Pod and I’d feel like I was almost cheating on them… Although I might have to try it after the good food review…

The Vanilla pod is kid friendly, but I’ve never seen a kiddies play area before in a restaurant in Dublin. It’s a great idea as I know so many people with kids who don’t bother going out because it’s more hassle than it’s worth! Luckily my fella loves food and once there’s something in front of him he’ll be fairly quiet!

  2. itsa on sandymount green has a lovely kids play area at the front of the cafe

  3. Definitely agree with Lydia, the food in Vanilla Pod, next door, is excellent, and good prices too.

We looked at Barry and Brownes before settling for VP, as both the staff and menu were frankly uninviting, a far cry from the atmosphere and grub on offer next door at VP.

  4. went to this place last weekend with my two kids. A friend of mine had recommended it. Was a great surprise to find this cosy little spot behind BB muffins. I had eggs benedict and it was without doubt, the best eggs benedict I’ve had in a long while. My kids had pancakes and nutella and the hubby had a gourmet burger. They were all fab and we finished up with the most amazing chocolate cake ever. They have a great selection of home-made looking cakes. The best part was that it was so child friendly and there was loads of space inside for buggies. There was a great kids play area down the back which occupied the kids for ages. will definitely be back.
