In today’s Irish Times, food critic Tom Doorley taste tests supermarket meal deals, and he’s pretty impressed with them all.

This time last year, the idea of a decent quality three-course meal with a bottle of wine costing €10-€12.50 simply didn’t cross anyone’s mind. Back then, ready meals were an afterthought, not something you might plan your weekend’s dining around.

Then, unexpectedly, M&S changed everything with their dine in for two option. Dunnes and Tesco followed, while Superquinn devised its own unique version – Meal Deals for four. Do you like these meal deals? What do you think stands out?

  1. We got the Tesco Indian Meal Deal at the weekend. €11.50 for 2 sides (Bombay potatoes & Onion Bhajis) 1 main (Chicken Jalfrezi) and 4 bottles of Cobra. Pretty good value and the meal was lovely as well. My boyfriend commented that he’s often had alot worse from a takeaway.

I was very impressed, we’ll get one again for sure.

  2. Myself and my “war office” love them – particularly the M&S ones. They do a lovely gammon, super sides, and yummie puddings and the wines are always passable.

  3. Had the delicious M&S gammon and vegetable side over the weekend. With a few baked potatoes, the main easily stretched to three people.

  4. loving the m&s, cant fault it at all…..however the Tesco ones are dreadful! will never buy again.
