McDonald’s still on top in recession

Posted by: jean in: Fast Food

McDonald’s is one of the few food retailers bucking the global downturn, with a reported 4.3% rise in sales in the month of July alone, according to the New York Post.  Their success is apparently down to their McCafes – I’m sure many of you will have already noticed that these McCafes are fairly prominently [...]

By Snack Box Not one to shy away from a new challenge, Snack Box made his way to South Anne St to visit Chick King, a new franchise chain of royal poultry manufacturers, owned by the Abrakebabra group. Whether it’s high calibre or not, you always have to hand it to any restaurant or takeaway [...]

One Sunday last year, I swung by a Centra for chicken breasts to throw in a Patak’s curry. It was definitely the vilest chicken I’ve ever eaten. Bleurgh. It’s half-price there at the moment. Don’t. However, they’ve a few bargains and special offers worth keeping an eye out for, most notably six free-range eggs for [...]

Quick and cheap curries in Dublin city

Posted by: jean in: Fast Food | Takeaways

I found myself needing to eat something quick in town two days last week.  Being strapped for time and fond of curries, I thought I’d try both times for something quick from a food court. Food courts used to mean a few depressing fast food stands (KFC, some weird baked potato place) circled around some [...]

On one of my rare trips to Dublin the other day, I was struck by the amount of offers out there. Fast food outlets, food shops, supermarkets, high-end restaurants: they’re everywhere. Chick King‘s new branch, just opened on South Anne St. beside La Cave, has a Mini Chicken Fillet Sandwich Meal for €4.95. Every Tuesday, [...]

The grottiest fast food?

Posted by: jean in: Fast Food

I think most of us will agree that fast food can be delicious and satisfying in the right place at the right time. Such as Rick’s Burgers on Dame St in Dublin, at 3am after a scatter of pints.  However, there is some fast food that makes the skin crawl, which no amount of pints [...]

Grab and Go

Posted by: peter in: Fast Food

Passing through the Ilac Centre with the lovely photographer Sue Jefferson, I was horrified to see this: I’m that weirdo who used to stand outside the Grab and Go on Dame St. loudly protesting about hot food from vending machines. I thought I’d seen them off, but clearly not. This is very very very cheap [...]

Fast Food Bonanza

Posted by: jean in: Fast Food | Food News | Recession

Every single paper seems to be reporting the news that fast food sales are showing a dramatic increase.  But we don’t want to give even more free advertising to the purveyors of crummy pizzas. Instead I’m linking to this delightful recession-themed cocktail that some American internet geniuses have come up with – the McNuggetini!

Everyone says that they know the best chipper in Ireland. But unless they tell you that it’s Leo Burdock’s, they’re talking a load of potato waffle. Ireland’s oldest chipper was here long before the likes of Borza and Macari. It’s gloriously unhealthy and a really consistently reliable treat. I really don’t see the point of [...]

The Chicken Hut, Limerick

Posted by: peter in: Fast Food | Restaurants | Reviews

Our friend Billy Mag Fhloinn sent a great review of Chicken Hut in Limerick: The Chicken Hut, 31 O Connell St., Limerick is renowned around Munster and beyond. It is, at the core, a very basic take away, but the food is top class, and the value is great. As you might expect, its main [...]
