In only ten short months of blogging, we have reached our 1,000th post. Yes indeed, 1,000 posts about cooking, bargains, food shopping, restaurants, giveaways, cafes, weeing in cafes, Tesco being evil, crackers, swizzes, table manners, disappearing icepops, cinema snacking and much, much more. We’ve had the best fun doing it, and want to thank you, our lovely readers, for reading and for giving us so much encouragement and feedback.
We have a great giveaway courtesy of Marks and Spencer to celebrate this milestone, and also to celebrate the introduction of Irish lilies to Marks and Spencers shops all across Ireland. You could win one of two €50 vouchers that M&S are giving away here.
27th Oct: This competition is now closed. Please check back tomorrow to see if you are one of the lucky winners.
About the new Irish lilies from M&S
Marks & Spencer have introduced Irish Lilies to their shelves in all stores across the island of Ireland. The lilies have been grown by Keeling’s in Van Dijk Nurseries, Dundalk, Co. Louth. They are priced €8.99 for 6 stems Longiflorum and €7.49 for 4 stems Oriental.
David Keeling, Managing Director of Keeling’s Fresh said, “We pride ourselves in our planting and growing our Irish lilies with personal care to create a beautiful, large, scented lily.”
Stewart Nisbet, Marks & Spencer Head of Foods for Ireland said: “We are delighted to now be in a position to offer our customers Irish grown lilies. We know they’ll be impressed with the quality of the product, as these lilies are both stunning in colour and have a delightful scent. The lilies are picked and packaged on the same day and then in our stores nationwide the very next day. This ensures their freshness and life span once you get them home, providing real value for money for our customers.”
At present Irish producers supply over 500 product lines to M&S stores in Ireland, including poultry, red meat, milk, cheese, bread, smoked salmon, fruit, salads, vegetables and now flowers. M&S currently have 20 stores in the Republic of Ireland and 19 stores in Northern Ireland, employing nearly 6,000 staff in total.

We have two €50 vouchers for M&S to give away. To enter, simply pop a comment in the box below, telling us what you think of CheapEats, and any suggestions you have to improve it. As usual, the winners will be chosen at random. Remember, enter once and you have two chances to win.

I am a big fan of cheap eats because enjoying good food is something that everyone can get pleasure from. Since moving to Ireland I have found shopping in city centre ‘supermarkets’ to be a depressing business, and welcome new recipe ideas, information about good value eateries and scams etc. to be avoided. Thanks Cheapeats for providing this and some great competitions too !

Congratulations!
I was at a talk given by Darina Allen the summer before last and she was giving out that no one foraged any more. I can’t find a good online resource for e.g. blackberry picking time, or wild garlic on Howth Head, etc. I know it’s not called FreeEats but that wouldn’t be a bad article!

Congrats on 1000 blog posts. The site is a bit like my school home ec book – well thumbed for advice and full of little gems. My personal favs are the recipes and the restaurant reviews – but the exposé pieces are true consumer journalism….. well done and please keep going – we’ll keep coming back.

I love keeping up with special offers in different cafes and restaurants around the place on Cheapeats. Love M&S too but its too expensive most of the time for me unfortunatley
Thursday 22 October, 2009 at 12:17 pm
a way to maybe improve your restaurant offers which i dont think has taken off as well as you may have liked might be to do something like a monday night food club.
I know in my area in Dublin a lot of restuarants are closing on mondays as they are empty. I am sure if someone was to turn around and offer to fill a restaurant for them that was going to be empty otherwise they would be probably be quite willing to offer a pretty competitive offer. If your interested would love to talk to you more about the idea.
Thursday 22 October, 2009 at 1:38 pm
